The Faculty of Law of Mari State University was created in 1993-1994. It became an independent structural unit of the university on October 27, 1993. This day is considered as the official date of its formation, the birthday of the faculty.
In 1996 the Faculty of Law became one of the first members of the Russian Association of Colleges of Law. The same year the Lycéum of Economics and Law was opened at the faculty (at present the Gymnasium of Economics and Law) where about 100 senior school students study annually.
In 1994 the faculty opened a correspondence department and in 1997 - a postgraduate course in three specialities.
On March 24, 1997 a legal clinic began to work. In the formative years the faculty had only one department - the Department of Law. However, in order to raise the standards of teaching and to ensure proper training of highly qualified specialists it was necessary to open new departments. In 1997 three departments were formed at the faculty: the Department of Theory and History of the State and Law, the Department of Public law of Russia and Foreign Countries, the Department of Private Law of Russia and Foreign Countries. In 2008 the Department of General Law Disciplines was created.
Today the Faculty of Law has the following departments: the Department of the Theory and History of State and Law; the Department of the Legal support of State and Municipal Administration; the Department of Criminal Law and Legal Proceedings; the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law; the Department of Civil Law and Legal Proceedings; the Department of the Private Law of Russia and Foreign Countries.
The Faculty of Law trains specialists in the following areas:
· "Law" – Bachelor’s degree. Forms of education – a full-time course of study (4 years), correspondence courses (4,5 years), the second higher education (3,5 years).
· "Law" – Master’s degree. Forms of education – a full-time course of study(two years), correspondence courses (2,5 years).
· "State and municipal administration" - Bachelor’s degree. Forms of education – a full-time course of study (4 years), correspondence courses (4,5 years).
