First Month in Russia: How to Find Your Way and Support

21.09.2026

The first month in a new country is always exciting — and overwhelming. New people, unfamiliar streets, different language, unknown rules. Sometimes it feels like you're lost in a flow of information and events.

But remember: you are not alone. Everyone who comes to Russia goes through this. And you have everything you need to adapt, find friends, and feel at home.

How to survive the first month: 5 simple steps

1. Find your "anchor point"
It could be a place — a student cafe, a library, a park near your dorm. Or a person — a curator, a tutor, a roommate. Or just a habit — a daily walk, a cup of tea in the evening. An anchor point helps you feel stable when everything around is new.

2. Explore the area around your university and dorm
In your first month, it's important to know where the nearest shops, pharmacy, bank, and public transport stops are. This gives you a sense of safety and control over your space.

3. Use translators and apps
Even if your Russian is not very advanced yet, modern technology can help: Google Translate, Yandex.Translate, voice assistants. Don't hesitate to use them — it's normal for the first period.

4. Participate in student events
Universities often organize excursions, quests, and meetings for international students. This is not only a way to discover the city but also a chance to meet other students who are also looking for friends.

5. Don't be afraid to ask for help
Ask your groupmates, curator, or staff at the international student office. People in Russia are usually responsive and ready to help if you approach them politely and openly.

How to deal with challenges?

Feeling lonely. Connect with other international students — they are going through the same experience. Don't withdraw into yourself, even if you feel like it.

Language barrier. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Russian people are usually patient with those who are learning their language. Your efforts will be appreciated.

Culture shock. Some things may seem strange or confusing. Give yourself time to get used to them. Over time, you will understand more.

What to do in an emergency?

Always keep with you:

  • contact details of your curator or tutor;
  • phone number of the international student office;
  • emergency services number — 112.

Conclusion

The first month in Russia is a challenge, but also the beginning of a big journey. You've already taken the hardest step — you came. The rest is just a matter of time. Remember: you are not alone. There are people around who are ready to support you. And there is a community of students just like you.

You can do it. You'll be fine.
