On September 12-13, 2025, the All-Russian School for Young Scientists "MitoROS" was held at Mari State University, dedicated to the fundamental and applied aspects of mitochondrial and oxidative stress research. The event brought together leading specialists in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, and biomedicine from scientific centers across Russia.
The school was opened by the Rector of MarSU, Mikhail Nikolaevich Shvetsov, who welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of developing scientific research and supporting young talents within the university.
Over the two days, renowned experts addressed the young scientists. A lecture on "Mitochondria as a Cellular Regulatory Center" was given by Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Professor Dmitry Borisovich Zorov from Lomonosov Moscow State University. Artem Petrovich Gureev (Voronezh State University) spoke about assessing mitochondrial DNA damage using long-range PCR. Professor of the RAS Daniil Viktorovich Popov (Institute of Biomedical Problems of the RAS) covered the topic of impaired mitochondrial biogenesis in human muscles during hypokinesia.
Specialists from MarSU presented their key research: Doctor of Biological Sciences Mikhail Vasilyevich Dubinin discussed the adaptive potential of mitochondria in Duchenne dystrophy, and Professor Viktor Nikolaevich Samartsev spoke about the inner uncoupling of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and its role in pathology. The school's inspiration, Doctor of Biological Sciences Konstantin Nikolaevich Belosludtsev, delivered a lecture on the role of mitochondria in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus.
Additionally, as part of the school, a master class on mitochondrial DNA sequencing was conducted by senior specialist Nikolay Baybaev from the company "Diaem."
The program of the second day was equally intensive. Presentations were given by Professor Boris Stivovich Shenkman (Institute of Biomedical Problems of the RAS) on energy-sensing mechanisms in muscles, Egor Aleksandrovich Turovsky (Institute of Biochemistry of the RAS) on selenium nanoparticles for cancer treatment, and Semyon Valeryevich Nesterov (Kurchatov Institute Research Center) on the capabilities of cryo-electron microscopy for studying mitochondria. Professor of the RAS Egor Yuryevich Plotnikov (Lomonosov Moscow State University) spoke about cutting-edge research in the field of intercellular transport and transplantation of mitochondria, and Roman Sergeevich Fadeev (Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Biophysics of the RAS) discussed the connection between mitochondria, inflammation, and oncological diseases.
The "MitoROS" School for Young Scientists served as an important platform for knowledge exchange, establishing scientific contacts, and discussing promising directions in modern biology and medicine. The knowledge and experience gained by the young researchers will significantly contribute to their future professional activities.
