Mari State University celebrates its 49th anniversary
On November 25, 2021, Mari State University celebrates its 49th anniversary. Almost half a century ago began the history of the first university in the Mari Region, which over the past decades has expanded significantly, transforming into a recognized scientific and educational center of the Volga Federal District and all of Russia.

Mari State University has established itself as a big republican and regional educational, scientific and cultural center from the moment of its foundation. Developing in accordance with the requirements of the time, today Mari State University has 13 departments and institutes, 9000 students, more than 100 specialties in the fields of natural, agrarian and humanitarian sciences, medicine, economics and management, digital technologies, pedagogy, law, physics and mathematics, culture and art. In the 1970s, when the university opened, there were only four departments: History and Philology, Biology and Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, Agriculture, where only 10 specializations were taught.
Mari State University is already an important and recognized scientific center. One of the most significant achievements of the university was the creation of the Engineering Center for the production of remote sensing airborne radar systems, which allowed to manufacture equipment for space satellites on the basis of the university. For several years, Mari State University has been fruitfully cooperating with the A.L. Mints Radiotechnical Institute, taking part in fulfilling state defense orders. Realizing the importance of digitalization, Mari State University became actively involved in innovative projects related to neural networks and artificial intelligence: thanks to the scientific developments of the university scientists, it is possible to detect pneumonia with 98% accuracy on digitized lung X-rays.

In September 2021 Mari State University has passed competitive selection and became one of 106 universities-winners of "Priority 2030" strategic academic leadership program - the program which directly influences the future of not only the education system, but the whole Russia.
Already now the university has launched projects aimed at the development of educational, scientific, innovative and educational activities, which will also affect the development of the city and the republic. The aim of modern university is not only to give high quality education and provide students with new knowledge and skills, but also to keep and increase intellectual potential of the Republic of Mari El, Volga Federal District and Russian Federation in whole as a part of world community.
Since its foundation Mari State University has been keeping traditions of classical higher education whose centers are faculties and institutes of the university. However, the tendencies of the modern world also affect the educational system, which in many ways is meaningful, that is why the modernization of universities is a constant process. But that does not mean that the traditions of the past are sidelined. Both now and in the future they will remain an unshakable basis for change and growth.
