The Mari Pedagogical Institute was established in 1931. In 2008 the Mari State Pedagogical Institute named after N.K. Krupskaya joined the Mari State University. In 2017 the Pedagogical Institute was developed into a separate academic unit of the university again.

Students can receive higher pedagogical and psychological education in various fields. There are 4 faculties in the institute: Faculty of Psychology and Pedagogy, Faculty of General Education and Professional Studies, Faculty of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Physical Training, Sports and Tourism.
